I’m celebrating our supreme emotion – love – all February! To kick it off, I’m bringing the loving kindness meditation to your body kindness practice. If you have the book, you may already know it well (see chapter 10)!
This one is perfect if you are new to meditation or if you really want to work on challenging that negative voice and build compassion, for yourself or others (or both!)
The 411 on LKM
Essentially, you’ll start by sending yourself some love, then someone you care about, then someone you feel neutral about, then a total stranger, then someone you dislike. (I’m serious about that last one, don’t skip it.) Letting go of what you don’t need often means sending peace and well wishes to someone you may not even think deserves your kindness. It may feel like difficult work, but it’s meaningful. You need to make space for compassion for all beings. I promise it will make you stronger. Here’s one of my favorite comprehensive explanations for LKM.

The Dalai Lama has been quoted as saying,
“This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.”
Before you go dismissing this as “woo,” there’s some good science behind this ancient practice. (See: 18 Science-Backed Reasons to Try Loving-Kindness Meditation)
